Hrmojur Island - Montenegro's Alcatraz

1 hour
40€/hour up to 5 people

Skadar Lake, majestically spread across the green hills of Montenegro, is not only the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula but also a true natural treasure that combines picturesque landscapes, rich history, and unique flora and fauna. Lake tours will provide you with unforgettable impressions, and the route itself is the perfect way to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of these places

Exclusive cruises on three handmade boats, crafted using traditional Montenegrin techniques, offer a unique experience, immersing you in the atmosphere of ancient fishing traditions while adding modern comfort. The boats accommodate up to 50 people, making them ideal for group tours, family outings, or corporate events

One of the most impressive places on Skadar Lake is the island of Hrmojur, often referred to as the “Montenegrin Alcatraz” due to its harsh history. In the 19th century, a prison was located here, built in 1843 during the reign of King Nikola. The island became a symbol of a brutal era, with prisoners held under harsh conditions, and the island itself was surrounded by the lake’s waters, turning it into an almost impenetrable fortress

Today, Hrmojur is a place that attracts not only historians but also nature lovers. The island is an ornithological reserve, home to rare bird species, including flamingos and other wetland species. During the boat tour, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the unique natural beauty of the area and learn about the island’s fascinating history

Immersing yourself in the atmosphere of Skadar Lake’s history and nature, along with a visit to Hrmojur Island, will provide you with unforgettable emotions and memories that will stay with you for a long time
